From an idea to a product: As Head of Technology Research, Dimo Dietrich has followed the whole lifecycle of an in vitro diagnostic test from the idea to its market launch and post market surveillance. Aim of this month's Career Development seminar is to show insights into the daily life of a scientist in a small company and the steps which are required to transfer a product idea into a successful product.

Topic: "Alternatives to bench and bedside - scientists and medical doctors
in management consulting"
Management consulting provides scientists and medical doctors with
exciting opportunities to work with leading health care organizations on
some of their most pressing strategic challenges, to gain experience
across a broad spectrum of health care related topics, and to rapidly
acquire business and management skills to serve them in a wide variety of
future health care related jobs. In this session, Dr. Nicole Szlezak will
discuss career paths and day-to-day work of management consultants working
in the health care domain.
Nicole is a consultant at McKinsey & Company, where she serves clients in
the firm's global health care and pharmaceuticals practice. Prior to
joining McKinsey, Nicole gained experience in a number of health and
science policy related positions, including biomedical research, not-for
profit management, and science journalism.
Bio:
Dr. Nicole Szlezák is a consultant at McKinsey & Company, where she serves
clients in the health care and pharmaceuticals practice. Her prior work
experience is in the field of global health. Between 2003 and 2008, Nicole
was a research fellow at Harvard?s Center for International Development,
where her work included a study of the Global Fund to Fight Aids,
Tuberculosis and Malaria and its impact on HIV/AIDS policy in China.
>From 2006-2008, Nicole also served as Chief Scientific Officer at
Prize4Life, a not-for-profit organization with the mission to accelerate
the search for a cure of ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) through the use of
large inducement prizes. Prior to that, she was a research physician
("AiP") in tropical medicine at the University of Tuebingen (Germany) and
the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Lambarene, Gabon, where she conducted
clinical trials and experimental work on malaria and schistosomiasis.
Nicole holds an MPA and PhD in Public Policy from Harvard, a medical
degree from Humboldt University / Charite Berlin and Dr. med. degree from
Tübingen University. During her medical studies, Nicole also worked as a
free-lance science writer for major German print media, including DIE WELT
and Sueddeutsche Zeitung. Nicole?s academic work has been published in the
Journal of Infectious Diseases,in PLoS Medicine and the Proceedings of the
National Academies of Science (PNAS). She is a member of the board at
Prize4Life.

“Career Development” with Sebastian Tegethoff, Patent Agent. Dr. Sebastian Tegethoff majored in biology at the University of Göttingen, Germany. He obtained a doctorate from the Max- Delbrück-Centre, Berlin in molecular medicine, studying molecular-genetic and biochemical protein-protein interactions, immunology and signal transduction. He qualified as a German patent attorney after studying in a Berlin IP law firm and then went on to establish his own law firm. In 2008 he joined the 24IP Law Group. His professional expertise lies in the fields of the pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and life sciences, medical technology and, in particular, endoprosthesis and expoprosthesis technology as well as the fields of mechanical engineering and chemical engineering.
