Soft Skills
The ZIBI Graduate School offers a variety of courses to teach the students so called soft skills.
The courses cover three main areas:
1. Basic Skills
„survive“ the PhD phase: time management, stress management, motivation, planning, ...
These courses are offered by the Humboldt Graduate School.
2. Communication and Networking Skills
Courses covering these topics include
- intercultural communication
- communication skills, e.g. body language, difficult conversations, communication in hierarchies
- scientific presentation, e.g. effective Power Point slides and posters, how to structure a scientific talk
- scientific writing
- communicate science to public
Additionally, we offer German classes for the foreign students for different levels.

26 – 29 October 2010, Course "Indesign CS4" with Sandra Ulbrich

3. Research Environment and Career Management
Courses covering these topics include
- ethics in science
- good scientific practice
- politics behind research (who decides which research topics are “hip”?)
- academic career in different countries
- grant writing, where to apply
- application in English, interview skills
- management skills
Additionally, we organize a monthly seminar “Career Development” which is part of our Students' Day.
A highlight in this area is our annual "Science - Ethics - Politics" workshop.
